Conditioned Play Audiometry (CPA) is a specialized, child-friendly hearing test designed to help young children participate meaningfully in an audiologic evaluation. By turning the test into a simple game, audiologists can reliably measure hearing ability in toddlers and preschool-aged children while keeping the experience positive and engaging.
When It Is Used
CPA is typically used for children between roughly 2 and 5 years old, a developmental stage where they can follow simple instructions and enjoy structured play.
It is also helpful for children who may struggle with conventional testing methods due to attention, anxiety or communication difficulties.
How It Works
During a CPA session, the audiologist uses play-based actions to encourage consistent responses. Instead of asking the child to say โyesโ or raise a hand, the task becomes a fun activity that the child performs whenever they hear a sound.
Common actions include:
- Dropping a block or ball into a basket
- Placing a ring on a cone
- Adding a piece to a puzzle
A typical CPA process involves:
- Conditioning, or using age-appropriate language to tell the child what will happen. Our audiologist will likely refer to the process as a game and tell them how it works.
- Screening, or testing the childโs hearing. Your child will wear headphones as they complete fun tasks, such as those outlined above. The sound will be gradually reduced to determine the quietest sounds your child can hear.
Because responses are gathered in a fun, developmentally appropriate way, CPA provides a dependable window into a childโs hearing ability. It helps audiologists guide next steps, whether reassurance, monitoring or intervention.
